The Animal Defense League of Texas (ADL) is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. A gift through your will, bequest, or life insurance policy is a powerful way to leave a legacy of love and help secure the future of dogs and cats in crisis at ADL.
If you have questions or would like to discuss planned giving with an ADL staff member, please contact Lilly Ortega by email at lortega@adltexas.org or by phone at (210) 655-1481 x 151.
Bequests:
Bequests are excellent sources of support that guarantee ADL’s ability to continue rescuing and sheltering abused and abandoned dogs and cats into the future. There are numerous ways in which bequests can be made to benefit both ADL and you, the donor, while also remembering your heirs. A bequest can consist of money, stocks, bonds, retirement accounts, real estate, life insurance, works of art, etc.
Sample Bequest of Remainder of Estate:
“I give, devise, and bequeath to Animal Defense League of Texas, TAX I.D. #74-6002033, all [or state the fraction or percentage] of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, both real and personal. Animal Defense League of Texas may be contacted at 11300 Nacogdoches Road, San Antonio, TX 78217, (210) 655-1481.”
Sample Bequest of Specific Amount:
“I give, devise, and bequeath $_____ to Animal Defense League of Texas, TAX I.D. #74-6002033. Animal Defense League of Texas may be contacted at 11300 Nacogdoches Road, San Antonio, TX 78217, (210) 655-1481.”
You should always consult with your attorney before modifying your will. For advice about planned gifts that benefit ADL while also supporting your financial and estate planning goals, please consult with a financial or estate planning professional.
Beneficiary Designations:
Not everyone chooses to make a gift through their will or estate plan. Some prefer the flexibility and simplicity of naming the Animal Defense League of Texas as a beneficiary of assets such as:
- IRAs and retirement plans
- Life insurance policies
- Donor advised funds
- Commercial annuities
Making this type of gift is easy. Simply request a change-of-beneficiary form from your plan or policy administrator or download the form directly from your provider’s website. Complete the form to include the Animal Defense League of Texas as a beneficiary and return it to your administrator. Once processed, your gift will be established to support ADL’s mission for years to come.
Gift of Life Insurance:
When the original purpose for a life insurance policy no longer applies—such as providing for children now grown or ensuring financial security for a spouse—your policy can become a meaningful way to support pets in ADL’s care. There are several ways you can give life insurance:
Name the Animal Defense League of Texas as a beneficiary of the policy:
This option is as simple as updating your beneficiary designation form with your policy administrator. You can designate the Animal Defense League of Texas as the primary beneficiary for a percentage or specific amount, or as the contingent beneficiary so that ADL receives the balance of your policy only if your primary beneficiary does not survive you.
Make an outright gift of an existing policy:
You can transfer ownership by naming the Animal Defense League of Texas as both the owner and beneficiary of an existing policy. This allows you to qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction if you itemize. If you continue to pay premiums on the policy, each payment is also tax deductible as a charitable gift.
Make an outright gift of a new policy:
You can take out a new policy and irrevocably name the Animal Defense League of Texas as both the owner and beneficiary of the insurance contract. Whether you make a one-time premium payment or pay annual premiums, each payment may be tax deductible if you itemize.
Gift of Appreciated Securities:
Securities and mutual funds that have increased in value and been held for more than one year are popular assets to use when making a gift to the Animal Defense League of Texas. Donating appreciated securities or mutual funds not only supports our mission but also provides you with financial benefits.
When you donate appreciated securities:
You can reduce or even eliminate federal capital gains tax on the transfer.
You may also be entitled to a federal income tax charitable deduction based on the fair market value of the securities at the time of the gift.
Securities are most often given to ADL in two ways:
An outright gift:
By donating securities, you receive the same income tax savings as if you had written a check, with the added benefit of eliminating capital gains tax on the transfer.
A transfer on death (TOD) account:
By placing a TOD designation on your brokerage or investment account, that account will be transferred to one or more individuals or charities, such as the Animal Defense League of Texas, after your lifetime.
State laws govern transfer on death accounts. Please consult with your bank representative or investment advisor if you are considering this gift.
