PAWS for a Cause

Once upon a time, in a cozy kennel at the Animal Defense League of Texas (ADL), there lived a little puppy named Jackie. With her soft chocolate-and-vanilla-colored fur and soulful eyes, she captured the hearts of everyone she met. But beneath her playful, puppyish charm was a secret—a tiny heart working far harder than it should.

At the end of December 2023, Jackie and her siblings were surrendered to ADL. Following her spay surgery, our medical team discovered that Jackie was a bit different from the rest. She had a congenital heart defect, a condition that caused abnormal blood flow between the chambers of her heart and placed immense strain on her small body.

Despite her diagnosis, Jackie’s spirit never wavered. She was full of life—goofy, affectionate, and always ready to wag her tail at anyone who passed by. She loved cuddling with her foster family and soaking up every moment of attention. But time was critical. Without intervention, her condition could eventually lead to heart failure. It became clear: Jackie needed life‑saving heart surgery.

As a nonprofit organization, ADL relies on the generosity of our community to provide critical care for pets with urgent medical needs. To give Jackie—and others like her—a fighting chance, we launched the PAWS for a Cause Emergency Medical Fund. Our supporters answered the call. Donations poured in, demonstrating the incredible compassion of our community and proving that even when adoption or fostering isn’t possible, giving still changes lives.

Jackie’s story quickly touched hearts across San Antonio and beyond. She was featured on KSAT12’s Good Morning San Antonio, shared widely on social media, and proudly became the “spokespup” for our PAWS for a Cause Emergency Medical Fund.

We’re overjoyed to share that Jackie’s surgery was a success. Today, she is happy, healthy, and thriving—and even better, Jackie has since been adopted into a loving forever home. With her repaired heart and playful personality, she’s now enjoying the kind of life every puppy deserves, surrounded by love, comfort, and joy.

Jackie’s journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together. Her heart didn’t just heal—it found where it truly belongs.

When you support ADL, you help make stories like Jackie’s possible. You help us say yes to lifesaving care, yes to second chances, and yes to happy endings.
