Samuel’s Second Chance

Samuel is a 5-year-old Mastiff mix with a heart as big as his paws. When he arrived at the Animal Defense League of Texas (ADL) last October, he quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite. One look into his soulful eyes, and you’ll understand why. He’s calm. He’s kind. He’s a couch snuggler, a kid cuddler, and a friend to furry pals. Samuel is the kind of dog who doesn’t just live in your home—he fills it with peace, laughter, and love. But Samuel has had a rough road.

He came to ADL with a complex skin condition—chronic pyogranulomatous dermatitis with folliculitis and furunculosis (try saying that three times fast!). His condition is resistant to most antibiotics, and it took time, testing, and a team of vets to find a treatment that works. But through it all, Samuel has been a champ. Never grumpy. Always sweet. Always hopeful.

Today, he’s thriving on a manageable routine—just a special diet, some medicated baths every two weeks (which he actually enjoys), and a low dose of steroids when flare-ups happen. It’s not a big ask. But to some potential adopters, it’s been too much. Despite his incredible personality, Samuel keeps getting passed over because of his medical history. He doesn’t know that. He just keeps wagging his tail, waiting for his person.
