Happy Handling: Helping Your Dog Feel Safe and Loved

Keeping Your Dog Calm
The best time to practice handling is when they are calm, like after playtime or a meal. Watch for signs of stress, like yawning, lip licking, or a stiff body, and stop if they seem uncomfortable. Always keep handling positive by using treats and going slow. Helping your dog feel relaxed and comfortable with touch makes vet visits, baths, and everyday care much easier for both of you!
Basic Handling Exercises
Making handling a positive experience will help your dog feel safe and comfortable. You can start these exercises when your dog is young, but if they’re older, just go at a slower pace. Keep each session short—about 5-10 minutes a day. Here are some simple exercises to try:
🐾 Gently pet from head to tail, then give them a treat.
🐾 Hold their collar or harness and reward them.
🐾 Touch their paws, ears, and tail gently, then praise them.
🐾 Let them sniff nail clippers and reward them.
🐾 Wipe their paws with a towel, then give a treat.
🐾 Gently rub their belly, then praise them.
Relxation and Health Checks
Massaging your dog helps them relax and lets you check their body for any lumps, cuts, or sore spots. Teaching them to lie on their side makes vet visits easier!
Collar and Harness Support
Dogs should feel safe when you grab their collar or harness. Practice holding it gently during play and reward them so they don’t get nervous. Never use collar grabs to scold!
How to Pick Up Your Dog
Use a cue like “Up!” before lifting. Small dogs can be held like a football, while bigger dogs need both arms for support. Large dogs may need two people to lift safely.
Muzzle Training
Even friendly dogs can bite if they’re scared or in pain. Training your dog to wear a muzzle in a positive way ensures they stay calm if they ever need one.
Remember:
Always be gentle, pay attention to your dog’s signals, and let them set the pace.
Handling should be a positive experience, helping your dog feel safe and comfortable in any situation.
With patience and kindness, you’ll build trust and make every interaction a happy one!
