Court-Ordered Community Service
Community Service Guidelines
If you have been ordered by the court to complete community service hours and have chosen the Animal Defense League to fulfill them, please carefully review the following information.
Important: Court-Ordered Community Service is a separate program from our regular volunteer program, with its own requirements and guidelines.
Service Hours:
- Monday – Friday: 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
- Saturday & Sunday: Availability based on staff discretion
- Holidays: No service on Thanksgiving, Christmas, or the 4th of July
- Note: Hours are subject to change based on staff availability.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Participants must be 18 years or older.
- Individuals with felony charges or misdemeanors of a violent or sexual nature are not eligible.
How To Register:
To start the process, follow this link to set up a Better Impact account and register as a Court-Ordered Community Service volunteer. Once you register for an account, further instructions on how to complete your hours will be available.
Daily Commitment:
- Volunteers must commit to a minimum shift from 9 AM – 1:00 PM.
Dress Code:
To ensure safety and professionalism, all volunteers must dress appropriately for outdoor labor:
✔ Required: Sturdy, closed-toe shoes (e.g., work boots or sneakers).
✖ Not Allowed: Sandals, Crocs, shower shoes, yoga pants, jeggings, short shorts, skirts, halter tops, or tight-fitting clothing.
✖ Inappropriate prints: Clothing with offensive or inappropriate messages is not permitted.
Failure to adhere to the dress code will result in dismissal for the day.
Assigned Tasks:
- Expect physical, outdoor labor, including landscaping, cleaning, painting, and general maintenance.
- You will get dirty. Dress accordingly.
- Unless explicitly directed by staff, interaction with animals is not permitted.
- Daily assignments may vary based on shelter needs.
Code of Conduct:
- Volunteers must always conduct themselves respectfully with staff, fellow volunteers, and the public.
- Any inappropriate behavior may result in immediate dismissal.

The Animal Defense League of Texas reserves the right to send away any community service participant unable or unwilling to follow these guidelines. You serve your hours at the discretion of the staff. Be prepared to work hard, follow instructions, maintain a positive attitude, and stay busy.
