Manny & Tyler’s Story

Sixteen years ago, one family came to the Animal Defense League of Texas planning to volunteer for the afternoon. They left with two dogs who would change their lives forever.
“My daughter was in high school at the magnet school at Roosevelt High, DATA. She needed community service hours, so we went to walk dogs at ADL. I told her we were not adopting dogs. I loved dogs, but I didn’t think I had room in my life for the complications of dog ownership. But she fell in love with one dog, and I fell in love with another, and we came back later that day and adopted both.”
Manny and Tyler, both adopted in April 2010, quickly became part of the family’s story. They moved together from San Antonio to Kentucky to Laredo to Fort Worth, and through every new chapter, the two dogs were right there beside them.
Manny passed away at 14 years old, deeply loved and never forgotten. He was surrounded by the family who gave him a second chance and a lifetime of love.
Tyler, now 17, is still going strong. He found his person in his mom and has stayed faithfully by her side ever since—even waiting by the window when she’s away.
What began as “we’re not adopting” became 17 years of companionship, loyalty, and unforgettable memories—all because they said yes that day.
Now, as the family looks ahead to retirement, they hope to continue that love by opening their home to senior dogs and giving them the comfort and care they deserve in their golden years.
