Join the Continued Fight Against Heartworms

Categories: Featured Story, Informative, Ways to help ADL

According to the American Heartworm Society, “More than a million pets in the United States have heartworms.” In 2021, ADL treated 205 dogs that were suffering from Heartworm disease, and continue to see dogs come into our care that require treatment this year. Heartworm disease is caused by a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis. These worms are spread through the bite of a mosquito.

Chavo is a 3-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix. He was found roaming in San Antonio and was brought to ADL by a good Samaritan in January. Since his life-saving treatment, Chavo has served as an ADL pet ambassador for several volunteer orientations and humane education presentations. He loves people (especially children), does well with most other dogs, and knows some basic commands. This “12/10 Good Boy”, as described by our staff, did not get the essential Heartworm prevention to keep him safe from the disease, but fortunately, received treatment before it was too late.

Please join the continued fight against Heartworms and support helpless pets like Chavo by donating today.
