Unleash the Learning: Leash Training Made Easy

Proper Leash Technique
With practice and patience, you can teach your pup to walk nicely on a leash. Start by holding the leash in your dominant hand with your thumb in the loop, folding it like an accordion. Your other hand should hold the leash closer to your dog, keeping him on your non-dominant side with his front legs even with yours. The leash should always be loose, forming a J-shape between your hand and his collar.
Training Methods
Luring to Heel Position and Walking Exercise
🐾 Stand still with a treat in your dominant hand
🐾 Lure your dog to your side using the treat
🐾 Say “Let’s go” and start walking. If your dog pulls, stop and wait until the leash loosens.
🐾 Reward him every few steps when he stays by your side
🐾 Use stops, sits, and turns to keep your pup focused!
Off-Leash Training in a Safe Area
🐾 Show your dog a handful of treats and keep them near your thigh
🐾 Walk away, encouraging your dog to follow close
🐾 Say “Yes!” and reward when he changes direction with you
🐾 Once he’s consistent, practice on a leash
Change Directions When Pulling
If your dog pulls, use the “Let’s go” cue, turn around, and walk in the opposite direction without jerking the leash. Encourage him to follow, and when the leash relaxes, turn back and continue forward. This method helps your dog learn that pulling won’t get him where he wants to go. Be patient, and reward him when he walks nicely by your side.
Be a Stone
If you prefer not to use treats, the “Be a Stone” method is a great alternative. When your dog pulls, simply stop walking and stand still. Wait for him to release the tension on the leash by stepping back or sitting. Once he relaxes, say “Let’s go” and move forward again. Mark his success with “Yes!” and continue using stops and turns to reinforce good habits.
Walk Backwards
For eager dogs who tend to surge ahead, walking backwards can be an effective tool. If your dog pulls and the leash tightens, immediately start walking backward. As soon as he turns toward you, say “Yes!” and reward him by moving forward again. Repeat this process consistently so he learns that staying close is the key to moving ahead.
Extra Tips for Success:
🐾 Play before training to release energy.
🐾 Make walks fun and mentally stimulating.
🐾 Be an oak tree, not a willow, stay firm & consistent! If your dog pulls toward something, turn and walk the other way.
