Pawsitive Training: A Guide to Reward-Based Cat Behavior

Why Train a Cat?
Training isn’t just for dogs! Teaching simple behaviors can:
🐾 Strengthen your bond
🐾 Reduce unwanted behaviors
🐾 Build confidence in shy cats
🐾 Make vet visits and handling easier
How to Use Positive Reinforcement
Find the Right Reward: Every cat is different! Try small treats, gentle petting, or playtime with a favorite toy. Reward Immediately: Cats learn best when rewarded within seconds of good behavior. Timing is everything! Keep It Short & Fun: A few minutes a day is all it takes. End on a positive note before your cat loses interest. Stay Patient & Consistent: Cats learn at their own pace. Ignore unwanted behaviors and reward good choices.
Training Tips for Common Behaviors
Coming When Called
🐾 Say your cat’s name in a happy voice and follow with a reward.
🐾 Start close by, then increase the distance over time.
🐾 Use a distinct sound, like a clicker or treat bag shake, to reinforce the behavior.
🐾 Using a Scratching Post (Not Your Couch!)
🐾 Place the scratching post near their favorite scratching spot.
🐾 Sprinkle catnip or dangle a toy to encourage use.
🐾 Reward with praise or treats when they use it.
Litter Box Success
🐾 Keep the litter box clean and in a quiet location.
🐾 Offer gentle praise after use—cats appreciate positive reinforcement too!
🐾 Never punish accidents—clean the area and encourage proper use instead.
🐾 If issues persist, rule out medical problems with a vet visit.
Getting Comfortable with Handling
🐾 Start by petting areas your cat enjoys (chin, cheeks).
🐾 Gradually introduce gentle touches to paws, ears, and belly (if tolerated).
