{"id":23943,"date":"2014-04-09T17:14:51","date_gmt":"2014-04-09T22:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.adltexas.wpengine.com\/?p=341"},"modified":"2014-08-26T02:26:01","modified_gmt":"2014-08-26T02:26:01","slug":"lets-be-friends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adltexas.org\/es\/news\/lets-be-friends\/","title":{"rendered":"Seamos amigos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.adltexas.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/bull.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-343\" alt=\"bull\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.adltexas.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/bull-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>For anyone who has ever heard some describe their dog as \u201caggressive,\u201d you are not alone!\u00a0 The truth is, in many cases it\u2019s not aggression at all but REACTION that\u2019s the problem.<\/p>\n<p>A trigger for a reactive dog can be anything from another dog, to strangers to cars or vacuum cleaners.\u00a0 The reaction can be out of fear or excitement and yes, sometimes it is aggression.\u00a0 Whatever it is that has your dog reacting, there are some things you can do to try to work on it.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Don\u2019t \u201cmother\u201d a fearful dog.\u00a0 This one is the hardest for me, because I have a fearful dog who is big and brave at home, and a big wimp in the real world.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard not to tell him that everything is ok and give him a big hug when I see him getting scared.\u00a0 The problem is, if I do that I am just reinforcing that \u201cTHAT THING\u201d really is scary.\u00a0 So to train him, I had to train myself not to react to his reactions.\u00a0 That means if a person is walking past us and he starts to get scared, I ignore that reaction and just keep walking like there\u2019s not a care in the world.\u00a0 That way he sees that \u201cTHAT THING\u201d didn\u2019t bother me, so it shouldn\u2019t bother him!<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t force your dog to make friends.\u00a0 Forcing a dog to be friendly can backfire fast.\u00a0 Always go at your dog\u2019s pace.\u00a0 Some dogs just don\u2019t want to share or make friends.\u00a0 Making them go to the dog park or making them sit next to people can just make them even more frightened.\u00a0 That, in turn, can make them even more reactive.<\/li>\n<li>Work on desensitizing to people and other dogs.\u00a0 Unless you have an extremely stubborn dog and you\u2019re fine with being his\/her whole world, don\u2019t turn your dog into a hermit.\u00a0 Take your pup on car rides, on walks and to the pet store when possible.\u00a0 Figure out how far away you can be from a person or dog before he starts to react.\u00a0 From that point, ask your dog for a behavior he knows like a sit and then reward.\u00a0 Take a few steps forward and reward again if he\u2019s not reacting.\u00a0 The goal is to gradually get closer and continue to create positive associations and reinforcements.<\/li>\n<li>Move at your dog\u2019s pace.\u00a0 There is nothing wrong with taking a few steps back and starting again if your dog starts to react to \u201cTHAT THING.\u201d\u00a0 This does take patience so be sure to pack plenty of it!<\/li>\n<li>Use the same redirection at home.\u00a0 Whether your dog is barking or scared of visitors, if you see that behavior popping up call your dog to you.\u00a0 Once again ask him to do something he knows (like sit) and reward.\u00a0 Rewards can be treats or praise, whatever works best for your dog.\u00a0 The goal here is to show your dog that he can alert us to things outside the house in a calmer manner AND get rewarded.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The bottom line is reactive dogs are NOT bad dogs.\u00a0 They just had some bad experiences or just happen to be painfully shy.\u00a0 Although our dogs have their loud barks, we are truly their voices.\u00a0 We have to be willing to ask people not bring their dogs to close, or to walk the other way when necessary.\u00a0 We have to be able to ask people not to pet our dogs or to ask them to wait until our dogs are sitting and being nice before touching them.\u00a0 I know with my shy guy, it\u2019s my honor to be his first line of defense.\u00a0 When he\u2019s ready to make new friends, I\u2019m ready to let him!<\/p>\n<p><em>The Animal Defense League of Texas has a certified dog trainer on staff and offers low-cost dog training and free puppy classes. \u00a0For more information please click\u00a0<a title=\"ADL dog training\" href=\"http:\/\/adltexas.wpengine.com\/dog-training-in-san-antonio\/\">aqu\u00ed<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Si alguna vez has o\u00eddo a alguien describir a su perro como \u201cagresivo\u201d, \u00a1no est\u00e1s solo!
